[ dextera assumes that the demons are what one would expect from the quest objective, dastardly indeed, but hopefully they’re just tricky rather than dangerous. it’s hard to tell, and he’s wary of creatures of darkness since the bogeyman. ]

[She's joking, of course. But despite the attempt at humour she's also sticking closer.]

Can you sense if one's close?

[ as if on cue, a branch snaps in the distance. it sounds purposeful, menacing, and dextera automatically moves a little closer to kaoru. ]

That’s probably it.

[Well then.

She positions herself so it'd be easier to watch their back.]

Should we attack as soon as it shows its face?

I think so.

[ dextera’s sword is out, and it’s not one of the special ones he has access to—it doesn’t seem wise to throw out a seductive sword where a demon could turn it against them, so this is a plain ol’ junky sword. it illuminates with light, and that seems to be enough to draw the demon—demons?—out of hiding.

something is laughing, in any case, and too-quickly wraps a clawed hand around kaoru’s ankle. ]

[It wouldn't be easy to drag her off, but the demon is definitely trying. She focuses her power at the tip of her fingers and sweeps it out.]

[The demon can live without its hand, right???]

[ it’s a less elegant sound than dextera would have hoped to make, when he’s trying to look cool and competent, but there’s only so much he can do when kaoru apparently just sliced through the air with an invisible blade.

where the demon’s hand is cut off, it leaks darkness—and then grows back in an instant. the shadowy creature draws itself to full height, and although it blurs at the edges for the moment, what it comes out looking like is kaoru herself. ]

It’s one of those kinds… be careful.

[ dextera is the one who should be careful, really, not to get them mixed up—but they’re discernible for now, since one of them is made of darkness and one of them is not. ]

Stand back!

[The hand gripping her ankle disappears into smoke...if only the rest of the demon would too. When the demon shifts into her form, she frowns and points at it angrily.]

I'm way cuter looking than that!

[...is that really the problem here, Kaoru!?

She moves back when Dex tells her to...but she doesn't go far, close enough to protect him if she needed...or even to grab him and run. But first...]

I can pin it down. [Since it's clear she can't hurt it but she can still make contact. If she can immobilize it, it'd make things easier for him.]

[ dextera is finally learning how to fight in a group. maybe two people isn’t exactly a group, but it’s more than he’s used to, and he’s willing to let kaoru do what she must in order to keep the both of them safe.

his sword illuminates with his holy power, and he nods to kaoru to keep it still. ]

[She waits for the nod--or any kind of signal. Even if he can speak now she's used to watching him for answers.

She throws out both her hands.]

Psychic Pin This Thing Like A Bug!

[She uses her powers to pick off its feet, then suddenly slam it down on the ground. She tries not to create too much of a crater, but the ground still cracks beneath the demon that was struggling there.

...it's really freaky to do this to something that looks so much like her.]

dextera doesn’t stop to question it, though, because it doesn’t really matter as long as it works. not everyone can have the best naming sense, and it did exactly what it said it was going to do.

with the demon pinned, dextera brings his sword up over his head and then slams it down across the shadowy form of kaoru. it does bother him, of course, to go for her head, which is why he slices across her middle instead. the demon writhes where it’s been split, with no organs to speak of, but it’s clearly in pain. ]

Ngh… can you keep holding it?

[The names of her moves changes all the time, don't ask too much of me her!

...also. This is seriously weird. But she holds the demon down anyway.]

Gross.

[She's decided she's adding something about this to Mr. F's list of crimes. She hasn't figured out what yet. Maybe sue him for emotional damage.]

No problem!

[She presses down harder, causing the cracks in the ground to grow longer.]

[ with another deep breath, dextera brings his sword down a second time—this time, the light well and truly vanquishes the demon, leaving not even a trace of shadow in the cracks of kaoru’s crater. ]

Ah… hah… do you sense anything else? Nearby?

[She relaxes her powers when the demon disappears.]

No. I don't sense anything. [She drifts closer to him.] You okay?

I’m okay. Just tired.

[ if he had a little less pride, he might ask to be carried, but he doesn’t want to be a burden. (is that pride?) ]

I think… that’s enough.

[Tired is fine...as long as it's the truth anyway. It's fine because he doesn't need to ask.]

Wanna fly back?

[ thank goodness for kaoru’s generosity, honestly. ]

[She reaches out for his hand.]
