[ dextera takes the mirror then, and before he does anything, he squeezes kaoru’s hand even as his eyes are trained on his own reflection in the glass. then, after a deep breath, he speaks one quiet sentence. ]
…let me see Guren.
[ as soon as he asks, the mirror’s reflection shifts and changes until they’re both treated to a scene of guren, and two men in similar uniforms. dextera recognizes them as shinya and kureto, but whether kaoru does or not, he can’t say. guren looks as tired as he always has, but there’s some progress in his expression, too. he seems better than he did, when he was trapped in the town, and his two companions share some quick banter before guren sighs. all-business as ever, he tells them this is no time to be goofing around, but there’s some light fondness in his voice that suggests he’s not happy, but confident.
that’s all either of them get to see, but it’s enough. it leaves dextera holding the frame of the mirror instead of the handle, and his shoulders are shaking just a little, but it’s… enough. guren is doing what he wanted to be doing, he’s with the people he wanted to help, and surely even kaoru can see the difference in the way he’s carrying himself in this little vision. ]
[She watches carefully as well, drinks in the sight in the mirror because she's...missed him a lot too, though she tries not to think too much about it most days.
She leans in closer, looping one of her arms around his, letting her cheek rest against his shoulder.]
This is… what he wanted. It was driving him crazy to be here.
[ after he’d come back from the forest, especially. even dextera couldn’t make this town seem like less of a prison to him, not that he really understood how anyway. ]
I’m glad, too.
[ his voice is soft, and he forces himself to take a deep breath—one that betrays himself on the verge of tears. ]
[ it feels selfish to cry, after everything. he shouldn’t be sad that guren isn’t here anymore, because guren really is doing better back where he is—but he doesn’t remember dextera, doesn’t remember anything from this place, and that hurts. he squeezes his hand, in kaoru’s. ]
You'll have to eventually...but it doesn't have to be right now.
[Because when it comes to it, in this case, letting go should be for himself and if he needed time to do that then that's okay.]
You're allowed to be sad, you're allowed to miss him. [She turns a little, uses her free hand to turn his face towards her.] I miss him too. I miss every person who's left this place that I had come to care about. I know they're better off at home and I wouldn't wish for them to come back but all the same...I miss them.

It's okay if you want to cry. There's nothing wrong with that.

I have to let him go.
